Belts

Each time you get a new belt you move up a grade via as special lesson with your Sensei. In order to go to this lesson you need to get a MOCK grading slip in one of your average lessons.
you start of as a:
White belt,
Red,
Yellow,
Orange,
Green,
Blue,
Purple tag/stripe,
Purple,
Brown tag 1,
Brown tag 2,
Brown tag 3,
Black belt, which then follows on to 1st dan, 2nd dan, 3rd dan, and so on...
you start of as a:

Grading
In order to grade you must not only show them your Kata, combinations and, basics, but you must do a certain amount of exercises depending on what grade you are and what grade you are going for, and the higher the grade you are, the more intense it gets, for example to get a black belt you need to know all of the lower belts grade, all of the higher belts grade (including your own), be fit as a fiddle doing at least a hundred of each exercise and so on....
